Dear Oaks Family Members,

Welcome to a new school year!  We are looking forward to your arrival. The purpose of this letter is to provide Oaks family members with information regarding: Orientation, the first day of school, school supplies, uniforms, and Back-to-School Night.

Orientation
For 8th grade students, orientation will be held Wednesday, August 3, 2016.   For 7th grade students, orientation will be held on Friday, August 5, 2016.  Orientations will be held in the multi-purpose room (MPR). Please see below for your orientation time. These are scheduled by the first letter of your child’s last name.  Parent/Guardian must be present in order for your child to receive his/her class schedule and textbooks. Please come prepared to fill out emergency cards.  During the orientation and a self-guided tour around the campus you will be able to learn more about clubs and activities, purchase PE clothes for $30 (cash only) and yearbooks for $25 (cash only) in the multi-purpose room (MPR). Parking is limited, so please arrive early. Students who are not able to attend orientation will receive their schedule on the first day of school which is Monday, August 8th. Alphabetical lists will be posted that will direct students to their first period class where they will receive their schedules. All students will be able to purchase their PE clothes during the first two weeks of school. Please keep in mind that there will not be any requested schedule changes made during the first two weeks of school – unless there is a schedule conflict.

First Day of School

The first day of school will be Monday, August 8th.  For safety reasons, please bring your child early to school between 7:20– 8:05 am. Instruction begins promptly at 8:10 am each day. During the school year, dropping off and picking up students can be a challenge—especially the later students arrive. Traffic can be very heavy and can get worse during rainy weather. When dropping your child off in the morning, please pull forward to the end of the red curb in the student drop off zone located in the front of the school before letting your child out of the car. This will allow us to accommodate more cars. In the afternoon, we suggest that you pick up your child in front of the school. Please remember: students are not allowed to jaywalk or be dropped off in the middle of the street. Students observed J-walking or walking in the middle of the street as determined by school officials may be subject to a consequence. Also, students riding bikes to school must wear a helmet, or their bike will be confiscated until their parent can pick their bike up. All traffic laws need to be obeyed to protect children and ensure smooth traffic flow. Skateboards, roller-skates, and scooters are not allowed. Students will be released from school at 2:25 pm.

School Supplies

DO purchase the following essential school supplies:

Three ring binder (2 inches; clear pocket sleeves on the front and back)

College-ruled paper

Graph paper (8 ½ x 11 inch)

Pens

Number 2 pencils

Pencil pouch (3-hole punched)

Colored pencils

Ruler

6-8 binder tabs

Your child’s specific teachers may have additional supply requests. You will be notified of these items as needed.

Uniforms

As you already know, Oaks is proud to be a uniform school. If you need a copy of the uniform guidelines prior to orientation, please come by the school office and we will gladly give you the requirements. If the bottom hem of your child’s white collared shirt extends past the wrist, they will be required to tuck the shirt into their pants/shorts. Thank you for helping to keep our students safe by understanding the importance of our uniform policy.  If your child receives a school earned T-shirt, such as band, drill, club participation or for participation in an extracurricular school activity; these shirts can only be worn on Tuesdays.  If your child purchases a PBIS shirt, they can be worn to school on Mondays.  PBIS shirts will be on sale the first few weeks of school.

Back-to-School Night

Mark your calendars!! Back-to-School Night is Thursday, August 25th.   Students will be dismissed at 2:25 pm on that day.  The following day Friday, August 26st dismissal will be at 12:55 pm.  Back-to-School night will begin at 5:30 pm and end at 7:00 pm. During Back-to-school night, parents will follow their child’s class schedule and hear presentations from their teachers.

Sincerely,

Dr. D. Foley, Ph.D., MBA
